Papers of Solomon Willard, most relating to the construction of the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown, Mass. for which Willard served as architect and superintendent. Copies of documents (1823-30) related to Willard's work for the Bunker Hill Monument Association include the association's act of incorporation and lists of officers, contracts, correspondence, agreements, instructions, accounts, circular letters, and diagrams relating to the design and construction of the monument, the quarrying of stone in Quincy, Mass., and the formation of the Granite Railroad Co. to transport the granite. The manuscript of Willard's "Plans and Sections of the Obelisk on Bunker's Hill, with the Details of Experiments Made in Quarrying the Granite" (1843) is also included. The papers also contain Willard's letterbooks (1826-44) containing copies of outgoing correspondence from the Wigwam Quarry in Quincy relating to the Bunker Hill Monument and other projects; Willard worked as agent for the quarry.
